The Grand Cru Schoenenbourg in Riquewhir is considered one of the best and most famous vineyards in Alsace. It is located in the southern part of Alsace, north of the city of Colmar. The wines from the Schoenenbourg were praised as early as the 16th century, and even the philosopher Voltaire owned several parcels in this cru.

The Gipskeuper soils of this steep vineyard are ideal for the Riesling grape variety, which here produces complex and profound wines that are appreciated worldwide. The cartographer Merian called them the noblest of this country as early as 1663.

Julien Schaal turns the Schoenenbourg into a brilliant Riesling Grand Cru with finesse and depth, which is actually sold far too cheaply. The scent is reminiscent of limes and fresh herbs, as well as a hint of honey. The concentration on the palate with the best freshness is remarkable, the rather cool 2021 vintage leaves plenty of room for minerality. An excellent Riesling that is only at the beginning of a long development in the bottle. Pleasantly dry, as always with Julien Schaal.
