Valtellina

Valtellina - Top-class Nebbiolo red wines from the Alps.

The Valtellina, a picturesque valley in the Italian Alps, is home to some little-known wine treasures that are no less than the top wines of Piedmont.

In these steep vineyards on the slopes of the Alps, the Nebbiolo reaches an unexpected depth and elegance after a long period of maturation. Like their brothers from Piedmont, the best Valtellina Nebbiolos are very long-lasting and refine over years in the bottle.

The wine-growing tradition of the Valtellina goes back centuries. Generations of winemakers have poured their knowledge and passion into these unique wines. The steep terraces that cling to the mountain slopes are not only an impressive spectacle, but also a testament to the hard work and dedication of the winemakers.

The Nebbiolo grape, also called Chiavennasca here in the valley, is the source of the best Valtellina red wines. It gives them their characteristic cherry and rose aromas, which are underlined by a fine minerality. Over time, the wines develop a complex range of aromas reminiscent of dried fruit, spices and sometimes even tobacco.

The DOCG classification for the Valtellina Superiore is a testament to the highest quality. These wines mature for at least two years and impress with their structure, their longevity and their ability to evolve over the years. The best origins such as Grumello, Inferno, Sassella and Sfursat produce particularly complex and long-lasting wines.
