Tuscany is, on the one hand, the traditional high-quality wine-growing region of Italy, and, on the other hand, the pioneer of modernity in Italian viticulture. The makers of the so-called "Supertuscans" , modern wines with barrique cultivation following the example of the great red Bordeaux, conquered Italian winegrowing in the 1970s by not adhering to the traditional wine production laws, but by producing modern wine, often with imported grape varieties, to the highest possible international standards. In the end, also the native varieties like Sangiovese benefited from these new methods and today produces qualities that could not be thought of 30 years ago.

The world-famous Tuscan wines have numerous appellations such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Vernaccia di San Gimignano are now also "brands" like Solaia, Tignanello and Flaccianello, all today are famous names of Italian wine production around the world.
