Rheingau red wine
In addition to the famous white Riesling wines, the Rheingau has excellent Spatburgunder, that are among the best red wines in whole Germany. The village Assmannshausen is the Pinot Noir stronghold in the Rheingau, but there are great red wines in the neighboring Rudesheim, too. The wines are labeled with the name Spatburgunder or with the French name of the grape "Pinot Noir".
Today, dry Spatburgunder dominates the high-quality wine production, while large traditional barrels (Fuder) are as common as the small 225L barriques, which characterize the wine with their more or less intense toasty flavours.
Rheingau Spatburgunder is not only one of the great classics of German viticulture, but also one of the best red wines of this variety, which can be bought at all.
