The enterprising wine producer Paul Mas has launched a new series that immediately received high praise from wine critic James Suckling: l'Artisan (=craft). The grapes are from particularly good vineyards of the Domaines Paul Mas and low harvest quantities of only 45/hl per hectare. They are bottled separately according to grape variety, such as this beautiful Pinot Noir IGP Pay d'Oc, which James Suckling awarded 90/100 points. A high praise in this price range.
The harvest takes place at night in order to start the fermentation with grapes that are as cool as possible, which emphasizes the fruit and avoids oxidation. The Pinot Noir grows here on clay/limestone soil in a Mediterranean climate and therefore has a softer and fruitier character than in the cooler areas from which it originally comes. The color is also darker than usual. 30% of the harvest was matured in French oak barriques. The result is an elegant Languedoc that combines aromas such as vanilla, cherry and strawberry with a fine Mediterranean flavor. It is beautifully balanced and has a long finish on the palate. Try it with grilled dishes, game or pizza and pasta.
