The Koonunga Hill Shiraz / Cabernet is a classic in the Penfolds range, it has been around since the 1976 vintage. It is also an absolute price-pleasure hit, as documented, for example, by the 92/100 of Decanter magazine. Quote: "Thick layers of ripe, lush fruit characterize this wine. Blackcurrant, plums and blueberries, with a subtle hint of cherry cough drops. This mass of fruit is polished with a vanilla oak veneer, eucalyptus lift and pine resin length. It's a lovely, deep profile and finishes with a decent mark of acidity."
This Koonunga Hill is the traditional Australian cuvée made from the country's most well-known grape variety, the Shiraz, which delivers a juicy fruity taste and the Cabernet Sauvignon, which contributes its fine-grained tannins to the special structure of this wine. Incidentally, Koonungs Hill is not a single vineyard, the grapes for this wine come from particularly good vineyards in South Australia, which are then composed by the Penfolds oenologists into this beautiful wine. Usually around two thirds Shiraz and one third Cabernet are used. Due to the expansion in barriques, it also gets a very nicely balanced wood note and delicate roasted aromas.
