The single vineyard Le Pas de la Mule (the mule pass) is the heart of the Mas Janeil winery. Here the vines grow on brown slate soil. 75% are very old Grenache Noir plants, plus 25% Syrah and 5% Carignan. Of course, the grapes are harvested by hand and then selected again on a sorting table, so that only the best goes into this top-quality red wine of the winery. The grapes are cold macerated for 4-5 days before fermentation to extract aromatic substances. After fermentation, the wines, separated by varietal, spend 12 to 16 months in 600L new French oak barrels, the so-called Demi-Muids. After the end of the barrel ageing, the best barrels are combined to Le Pas de la Mule.
The 2019 vintage yielded healthy grapes that had to be harvested in several passes due to the irregular ripening. The result is more than convincing. The 2019 Le Pas de la Mule has a darker garnet red color, despite the high proportion of Grenache Noir berries, which are not too intensely colored. The scent is reminiscent of dark berries, plums, spicy notes, juniper and cedar wood. The taste is characterized by plenty of extract, which perfectly dresses the ripe tannins that are definitely present, the wine has a perfect balance at a very high level, with Mediterranean fullness and warmth. Impressive!
