Oppenheim in Rheinhessen is south of the red slope of Nierstein and has a very different character to its northern relatives. Here the soil is very calcareous, which leads to completely different wines / Rieslings. The vineyards here are in the form of a natural amphitheater, which keeps the heat and thus promotes ripening. The calcareous soil, on the other hand, is conducive to minerality and finesse, which then leads to wines full of tension, as this handy local wine from the first locations in Oppenheim impressively demonstrates. Here you get a great local Riesling, which overshadows the great wines of many other wineries.

2021 was a rather cool year that can finally be described as classic stylistically, after all the many warm years before. The Oppenheimer Riesling by Kuhling-Gillot already shows this dashing minerality in the scent, plus fruit notes reminiscent of ripe apricots, citrus fruits and a delicate note of mint, the chalky soil suggests the scent of wet chalk, it is grippy and amazingly deep on the palate, while always being fresh and grippy. This clarity and mineral finesse inspires. It's certainly not the cheapest local wine, but here you get an outstanding quality that some Große Gewächs wines from other estates don't achieve. A really fascinating dry cool-climate Riesling that will give pleasure for many years.
