Burgundy varieties like this Pinot Gris (= Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio) also thrive in New Zealand. Mount Riley finds the perfect balance between the elegant components of grapes from the cool Awatere Valley and the juicier body grapes from the Wairau Valley. Due to the low yields, Mount Riley's Pinot Gris Estate leaves an extract-rich and almost creamy mouthfeel.
This Pinot Gris is fermented cool in steel tanks to intensify the fruity notes. It shows aromas such as apples, pears and herbs on the nose, on the palate it is of medium weight with a good texture and a rather soft and long finish.
Decanter magazine rated the 2016 vintage 92/100 and wrote: "An outstanding NZ Pinot Gris, dry yet richly flavored and satisfying". Unfortunately, no more recent vintages are described (as of April 2023).
The smooth nature of this white wine makes it a good partner for dishes with cream sauces, white meat, also for Thai cuisine or cheese.
