The Morgon Chateau Gaillard grows only about 200m from the vineyard in Fleurie. Here are the oldest vines from Clos de MEZ, the vines are on average a remarkable 80 years old. They only produce small yields of highly concentrated musts, which make this long-lived Beaujolais Cru one of the best wines in the area.
Warning: this is a wine that needs storage. It is conceived and made like a great red Burgundy from the Côte d'Or, complex and long-lasting, becoming ever more refined as it ages in the bottle.
William Kelley writes for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate about the 2017 Morgon Chateau Gaillard: "The 2017 Morgon Château Gaillard wafts from the glass with a perfumed bouquet of peonies, orange rind, wild berries and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied , deep and structured, with muscular but powdery tannins, lively acids and a sapid finish, this has turned out nicely. 92/100."
Andy Howard MW (Decanter magazine) is at 91/100 and writes: "Fine balance here with some spicy dark cherry notes on the palate. Attractive perfume of violets and rose. Plenty of sweet, ripe fruit on the palate, well-balanced with just the right amount of freshening acidity. Quite good concentration on the mid-palate as well, good mineral finish. Lots to like here."
