The Champ Roin vineyard in Mercurey on the Côte Chalonnais in southern Burgundy takes its name from the Gaulish, where it means small river. The very clay soil is ideal for Pinot Noir and the slightly north facing terroir is rather cool and therefore produces wines with freshness and structure.

The rather opulent house style of the Domaine Belleville also meets a terroir rich in finesse, which results in a suitable balance in the Mercurey Champs Roin. In addition, there is the juicy 2018 vintage, which steers the style a little more in the direction of body and fruit.

This red Burgundy was matured in French barriques for twelve months, around a third of which were new. For a Burgundian Pinot Noir, the 2018 Champ Roin is rather dark. The scent contains aromas of red and dark berries such as raspberries, blueberries, ripe cassis, a delicate roasted note and some cherries.

As mentioned above, the style of Belleville and the rich vintage prevail on the palate against the coolness of the location, which is why this Champ Roin is unusually powerful, well structured and in the best balance. It can be enjoyed young, but it also ages well in the bottle. At the table we recommend it with game, and of course with the Burgundy classics Boeuf Bourguignon or Coq au Vin.
