The Faustino 1 with the well-known Rembrandt label is the best-selling Rioja Gran Reserva ever. This wine was born in the 1960s and became an incredible success story. The frosted bottles have been around at Faustino since 1955, they were introduced to protect the wine from the effects of light. The Faustino I Gran Reserva is only available in very good vintages.
Stylistically, the Faustino 1 is still a classic Rioja with a long aging period in barrels, the 2011 vintage was 24 months in French and American wood. It is not a deep dark fruit concentrate, but a Rioja like it used to be, elegant, subtle, fresh and can be stored for a long time.
The ruby red color of this Gran Reserva is not too dark and has brownish notes at the edge due to the long barrel storage time. The scent is classic and complex, the fruit reminiscent of blackberries is balanced with spicy notes. On the palate, too, finesse takes precedence over fruit and power, the tannins are silky in the long finish.
The 2011 vintage was awarded a gold medal at the MUNDUS VINI wine awards in spring 2022.
