The Cuesta del Herrero from Pago Aylés has been awarded Vino de Pago, the highest quality level in Spain. The grape varieties for this cuvée are 40% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown at an altitude of 700 meters on stony clay soils and aged after fermentation in French oak barrels for 6 months. Incidentally, the grapes are harvested at night and then cold macerated to get a lot of color from the grape skins and to start fermentation as slowly as possible.
The Cuesta del Herrero has a deep dark colour, despite the rather light Garnacha grapes. The scent is intensely reminiscent of cherries and ripe dark berries, spiced with a fine note of wood. On the palate it is concentrated and juicy, but also with considerable delicacy and bite in the very long finish. A great wine!
The press almost fell over themselves because of the extremely high quality of this wine. Decanter magazine gave the 2020 vintage an incredible 97/100 points and titled it "Best in Show", while Mundus Vini awarded it a gold medal.
