In the mid-1990s, Bodegas Roda discovered that certain vines produced an even deeper and more concentrated wine than those in the immediate vicinity. This realization led to the first edition of the Cirsion in 1997, which was only produced for internal testing purposes, to determine whether something special had really been discovered here. The wine turned out to be big and independent, so that from the 1998 vintage onwards, the Cirsion was launched as the wine icon of Bodegas Roda. It is only produced in very good years, there was no Cirsion in 2014, 2013, 2008 and 2002.

This concentrate of all the positive properties of a Rioja is one of the great red wine experiences that you can have. The 2017 Cirsion by Bodegas Roda has a deep dark colour. In the nose you immediately notice the grandiose depth that is in this wine. It smells so incredibly complex of spices, ripe dark berries, chocolate, tobacco leaves and violets, wrapped in a delicate roasted note. Breathtaking already in the scent! On the palate it is in no way inferior, such a splendid density and enormous length. For all its intensity, this magnificent wine is never intrusive or paralyzing. This is how great wine works!

The winery itself declares the Cirsion 2017 as one of the best vintages so far. A smooth 100/100 is given to Proensa and even the strict Guia Penin is at 96/100.

Julie Sheppard from the wine magazine Decanter gives it a 97/100 rating and writes, quote: "Cirsion is made from grapes specially selected for their smooth tannins and spends less time in oak than Roda I. There's also more Graciano in the Tempranillo-dominant blend (11%), which aids freshness in warm years, although there were April frosts in 2017, the year finished hot with an early harvest approachable at a young age than Roda I, this has well defined blackberry and black cherry aromas, layered with spice, coconut, cocoa and a smoky edge silky tannins and beautifully integrated oak. Poised and elegant."

Despite all the euphoria, just a quick info, this is how it is made: the 2017 vintage consists of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Graciano. The wine is aged in 100% new French barriques for eight months. .
