The Ciliegiolo grape variety is widespread in central Italy and is a traditional component of many wines, such as Chianti. Its name means "little cherry", which is probably due to the distinct cherry aroma of the wine. Ciliegiolo is an ancient variety, it was first mentioned in the sixteenth century, it is also a parent of the Sangiovese grape variety. It produces powerful, low-acid wines that can be of high quality. Since the variety is not intended for DOC wine in Montalcino, this wine is called Toscana IGT. Mastrojanni's vines are growing in the Brunello vineyards of San Pio and Loreto.
Mastrojanni values Ciliegiolo so much that they have dedicated a wine to it. Wine from 100% of this grape is indeed rare, which makes this bottling all the more exciting. The 2020 Ciliegiolo has a very dark, almost impenetrable color, typical of this colorful grape. The scent has the characteristic cherry scent and is also reminiscent of ripe blackberries. The taste is opulent, with soft tannins, then juicy and simply delicious. A wine that tastes great even when young. Serve it for summer barbecues, pasta, risotto, antipasti or poultry.
