Chénas is the smallest of the ten Beaujolais Crus with only about 280 hectares of vineyards. Located north of Fleurie and Moulin-A-Vent, it has top quality granite floors that drain well and retain heat. Along with Morgon and Moulin-A-Vent, Chénas is considered one of the most powerful and high-quality Cru de Beaujolais.
Éric Janin has also recently started bottling a small batch of Chenas, which does not come from their own vineyards, which is why the label says "Maison" Paul Janin and not "Domaine". The vines are tended with the same care as our own facilities.
Currently there is the soft and juicy 2018 vintage, which resulted in very fruity Gamay wines with charming tannins and little acidity. It was matured in large wooden barrels for 11 months. Aromatically it is reminiscent of herbs, white pepper and ripe red berries. On the palate it has a lot of substance, but is also equally charming. You can start drinking it now, but you don't have to rush it. A delightful Beaujolais to take as a serious alternative to Côte d'Or Burgundies.
