The Schuettenberg is more of a hill than a mountain at 284m, but it is still the highest elevation in the Arbesthaler Land. This relatively high altitude has a west-facing part with calcareous soil that is ideal for growing Chardonnay, which can mature on the vine here for a long time without the resulting aging produced wines.
The must was spontaneously fermented in 228l Burgundy barrels and concrete eggs. The wine then matured in the small wooden barrels for another twelve months.
2021 was one of the best vintages in Austria in recent decades. The wines have a lot of extract, no overripeness and a vibrant, ripe acidity. Body and freshness at the highest level.
The 2021 Chardonnay Schüttenberg by Gerhard Markowitsch is very complex and at the same time full and structured. It has a fine, salty minerality that comes through beautifully despite the abundance of fruit. It tastes great when young and will develop positively in the bottle for many years.
Unfortunately, there are still no reviews for the recently released 2021 Markowitsch Chardonnay Schüttenberg (as of Jan. 2023). Falstaff gives the predecessor 2020 93/100, Parker is 91+/100 for the 2018 vintage.
An excellent accompaniment to fish and shellfish, dishes with light sauces, pasta with mushrooms or sushi.
