Badia a Coltibuono is one of the great classics of the Chianti area. It is housed in an abbey that is over 1000 years old and where Benedictine monks once started cultivating vines and olives. Badia a Coltibuono means "Abbey of Good Harvest".
In 1846 the ancestor of the current owners bought the estate and turned it into one of the best houses in what is now the Chianti Classico area. The wines are rightly considered long-lasting classics, and most of them are now certified organic, including this Chianti Classico.
It consists of the classic Chianti grape varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Colorino and is aged for twelve months in large oak barrels, as is common for classic Chianti. In its scent one finds cherries, pepper, fresh tobacco and a hint of violet. The taste is structured, fresh and elegant, the tannins marble the wine, the cherry note of the fragrance is found in the long-lasting finale. You can start enjoying it now (mid-2023), but it can also be stored for at least another five years.
The 2020 Chianti Classico Badia a Coltibuono has received 92/100 points several times. Decanter magazine, James Suckling and Falstaff magazine agree. The latter praises the fresh cherry fruit and the fine-meshed tannin.
