The Vigna Schiena d'Asino is the "Grand Cru" of the Mastrojanni winery. A Brunello di Montalcino from Sangiovese vines planted in 1978 in a particularly good vineyard, which give the wine its exceptional quality. The production of this only 1.2 hectare single vineyard is naturally very limited. It's usually around 6000 bottles per year.

The aging of this luxury Brunello takes a long 42 months and takes place in 1,600 liter Allie oak barrels. The wine is then allowed to rest another twelve months in the bottle before leaving the winery.

2016 was one of the greatest Brunello vintages of recent decades. The wines have a grandiose structure and concentration, the balance at the highest level is impressive. The press reviews are correspondingly euphoric, with Decanter magazine at 96/100, Parker's Wine Advocate and Vinous.com even at 97/100 (all for the 2016 vintage). Monica Larner (Parker) writes of "elegance and sheer energy". Mastrojanni's Vigna Schiena d'Asino is without a doubt one of the greatest Brunello di Montalcino ever, and all of that from a top year that has rarely been seen. Unfortunately, the available quantity is very limited.
