Quinta do Escudial, Dao (Portugal)

We like winemakers who go their own way. For Antonio Batista of the Quinta do Escudial and his oenologist Pedro Pereira, this is the total renunciation of wooden barrels of any kind. All wines are aged in tanks, as it is the tradition in the Dao region. Northwest of the city of Coimbra, in the north of Portugal, grown on granite soils. The white varieties are Barcelo, Encruzado, Malvasia Fina and Rabo de Ovelha and the red wine grapes Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro and Jaen. Above all, the powerful and intense red wines have a good reputation and are sometimes surprisingly elegant for their southern origins.
