The Eckert family originally comes from Switzerland. In 1991 Peter Eckert, formerly a manager in the insurance business, bought a dilapidated property in the Dão region in order to produce his own wine. Another example that, with commitment and the right idea, you can achieve great things even as a career changer. At the Quinta das Marias everything was uncompromisingly geared towards quality from the start, which is why the successes were not long in coming. The highlight perhaps was in 2014 the victory in the single-variety red wine category at the "Wines of Portugal" award, an important tasting with more than 1000 participating wines. Since then, the winery has been a fixture in Portuguese viticulture. The only 12 hectares of vineyards are planted exclusively with local varieties, with the white varieties the Encruzado plays the main role, the red ones are mainly Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo).
