Lima Smith is a young winery project with great ambition. In 2011, entrepreneur Marcelo Lima and foreign correspondent Tony Smith took over the Quinta de Covela winery in the southern Vinho Verde area at the Douro River. The estate used to belong to the famous film director Manoel de Oliveira and was considered a pioneer of organic viticulture in Portugal. However, production was stopped during the financial crisis in 2008. Lima & Smith were able to persuade the former manager and cellar master Rui Cunha to return and continue the success story of the estate. In 2013, the Quinta das Tecedeiras brand was taken over, under which table wines and port wines are marketed. A new ultra-premium line under this name is to be launched on the market from autumn 2021. The youngest project is Tormes, a tribute to the Portuguese author Eça de Queiroz. A modern interpretation of Vinho Verde is created here, prepared with great skill. All wines are produced as gently and naturally as possible, the Lima & Smith motto: "Our wines are the result of precise, yet low-intervention winemaking. Our work in the cellar serves mainly to highlight the terroir, balance and intrinsic characteristics of our grapes."
