Château du Glana, St.-Julien

In the 1970s, Gabriel Meffre, the owner of Chateau du Glana in Saint-Julien, succeeded in buying 35 hectares of "Grand Cru Classé" vineyard from the neighbor, Chateau Lagrange, who was in financial straits, thus increasing his chateau in quality and quantity. Since in Bordeaux, however, the Chateau and not the vineyards are classified, du Glana of course remains a Cru Bourgeois. Today, this purchase would be unthinkable, now the financially strong Cru Classé are buying every square meter of usable soil, since they often get more money for their second wine than a neighboring Cru Bourgeois for its "Grand Vin".

Today, 59.5 hectares of vineyards are owned by du Glana, 65% with Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% with Merlot, the Cabernet Franc has recently been completely replaced. Stylistically, du Glana produces a juicy, modern styled Saint-Julien in a comparable quality as many Cru Classé, but the price it is still much lower than these.
