Arrels (= Catalan for roots - the wine grows in the Catalan part of France) is the barrique-aged line of Mas Janeil. Half of the red Arrels is stored in new French oak barriques and half in second-hand French oak barriques and therefore shows a noticeable wood influence in the structure and aromas. The grape varieties in this magical cuvée are 60% Grenache Noir, 20% Carignan, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. Mediterranean without deviation. The age of the vines is considerable, 40-50 years for the Grenache, 30-40 years for the Carignan and even the relative newcomer Syrah is 20-25 years old. This gives substance and aromatic complexity.
James Suckling is between 93/100 (2018 vintage) and 94/100 (2015) for older vintages. Unfortunately, no more recent ratings for the 2019 vintage are available yet.
