Julien Schaal is a native of Alsace, actually a sommelier by profession, but switched to wine production a few years ago. In 2001 he started making wine in South Africa, and in 2011 he also started working in his home country. The special thing about the small boutique production is that only Riesling Grand Crus are bottled here, from six different crus with completely different soils that show the entire terroir spectrum of the growing area. Julien Schaal is considered a new top winemaker in Alsace and is now even selling his wines overseas.
The Grand Cru vineyard Kastelberg is located in Andlau, between Strasbourg and Colmar. Julien Schaal's Riesling vines stand here on a rare blue slate floor and have an average age of around 50 years. This creates a dry, top-quality Riesling with high concentration and great clarity. With all its abundance, it also has a wonderful elegance and freshness. A worthy Grand Cru that can be stored for at least 10 years, probably significantly longer.
