2019 Primitivo di Manduria Leggenda Vigne Vecchie, Vigneti di Salento

The Leggenda Vigne Vecchie label is one of the beauties of the Farnese-Vini collection. It comes from Apulia and belongs to the Vigneti di Salento series of the house. The hand-picked Pimitivo vines for this wine come from the best locations in Manduria with the oldest vines, many of which are over 70 years old. These vines only deliver small amounts of grapes or berries, but they have very concentrated juice and later produce a corresponding wine. After fermentation, the wine is stored for twelve months in barriques made from French and American wood. This gives additional structure and spice to these spectacular reds.
The 2019 Primitivo Leggenda Vigne Vecchie (=old vines) is once again a highlight, which is already indicated by the very dark, almost black color. Its expansive to room-filling scent is complex and reminiscent of ripe dark berries, black cherries and notes such as tobacco leaves, cocoa and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it is intense, very concentrated and with a powerful tannin structure, which is hardly noticeable in all the body and extract.

The Leggenda is an impressive high-end Primitivo that almost takes your breath away. In terms of intensity and fullness, it can hardly be surpassed. In terms of style, this is certainly not a happy soft drink for the terrace, but much more a really heavy red wine for quiet hours in front of the fireplace. Lovers of Amarone wines will also feel comfortable with him. It is not without reason that he has won numerous medals and prizes in recent years. Incidentally, Farnese was named best winery in Italy by wine critic Luca Maroni in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Competent winemaking is standard here, and the prices are always fair.
