For Charles Magnien, Vieilles Vignes (old vines) sometimes means really old. The vines for this wine have existed for 40-100 years and are also called Pinot Magnien, the family's own Pinot Noir clone. Thr result is a juicy Gevrey Chambertin. Stylistically, it goes in the same direction as the version from younger vines, but has a touch more of everything.
2018 was particularly concentrated, a massive burgundy with a darker pinot color. Fine oak in the nose, the toast is moderately intense, dark berries, some amarena cherries, light floral notes (tulips?), dark core in the fruit. Full-bodied, downright opulent for a Burgundy, still clearly a Pinot from Burgundy, has a lot of grip and is very long in the final. A modern wine, very well made, the balance is right and I don't see any over-ripeness in the aromas. Impressive. Frank Rembold in Nov. 2020.
