The Barolo by Pio Cesare is one of the great classics of Piedmont. A long-lasting, powerful, elegant and structured red wine at a very high level. In Piedmont it is traditionally customary to combine different vineyards. The 2018 Barolo Pio Cesare is from plots in Serralunga d'Alba (vinyards: Ornato, La Serra and Briccolina), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava and Garretti), La Morra (Roncaglie), Novello (Ravera) and in Monforte (Mosconi). All of these have their individual characteristics and give this Nebbiolo wine its unique character. The long aging period in large wooden barrels is just as traditional as the cuveeting. Pio Cesare matures the Barolo in them for 30 months.

As in many European wine-growing regions, the red wines of the 2018 vintage are also very charming in Piedmont and can also be enjoyed young. However, 2018 was not a hot year in Piedmont, as in DE or FR, but achieves this characteristic through its perfect harmony. The fruit is pronounced and the tannins are ripe, which ultimately makes the wines charming.

The 2018 Barolo Pio Cesare has notes of cherries, raspberries and plums on the nose. He is more tannic than his brother from Barbaresco, but definitely softer than many powerful Barolo years. The long finale is already well balanced, the delicacy of this wine is reminiscent of Burgundy, even if the aromas are completely different.

Wine journalists cannot escape this charm either, James Suckling awards 94/100, Monica Larner from Parker's Wine Advocate has a 93/100 and Weinwisser gives it 18/20 points.
