The Zweigelt Reserve is the most important and best-selling wine from the Seewinkelhof of the Salzl family. The winery is located in the village of Illmitz on Lake Neusiedl, known for its sweet wines and bird sanctuary that radiates tranquillity. In contrast to many of their neighbours, the Salzls turned to the production of dry white and, above all, red wines as early as the 1980s. Today they have a great wealth of experience and a head start in this category and also know how to handle the barrique barrel.
This is evident in this grandiose Zweigelt Reserve (formerly labeled Zweigelt Barrique). Its charm and thus its popularity is based on the finely spicy, smoky barrique toast with absolute softness and fruitiness, due to the super soft tannin in the taste. This fine tuning has real class. The Salzls do it without the bad habit of concealing residual sugar, which is unfortunately common today in many southern European wines. You don't need that with ripe tannins and perfect matured grape material, and you still have a harmonious wine that also tastes even more elegant and fresh.
The 2019 edition of the Salzl Zweigelt Reserve contains aromas such as cherries, blackberries, sour cherries, vanilla, toasted notes and a hint of cinnamon. This vintage was again very smooth at Weingut Salzl, the wine has a nice fullness of flavor and is round like a sphere. The result is an emphatically soft and harmonious red wine that can be enjoyed right after bottling. However, there is no need to hurry when drinking, depending on the vintage, it can also be stored for up to 10 years. Incidentally, the high-quality screw cap that has been used for several years also contributes to this, which also practically rules out bottle differences or even cork errors. We support this path of the Salzl family, a clean wine is more important than a "pop" when opening the bottle. Incidentally, this wine is also an impressive example of how well the Zweigelt tolerates storage in small wooden barrels if you keep the yield small and only use good, fully matured grapes.
This pure drinking fun from Burgenland was worth 92/100 points (2018 vintage) for Master of Wine Andreas Larson. The magazine Falstaff awards 90-92/100 for the 2019 Zweigelt Reserve and praises the minerality and lenght. High praise for this absolute hit in our range.
