The centerpiece for Langmeil's Orphan Bank Shiraz are 10 rows of ancient Shiraz vines on the banks of the river Para, which were planted before 1860. These were rescued a few years before the clearing and transplanted near to their original location. In addition, there are other first-class vineyards in the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, which means that the average age of the Orphan bank vines for the excellent 2014 vintage is still by a very impressive 95+ years.
The result is a huge Shiraz with enormous depth and complexity, the best use of barrique and an almost endless aftertaste. A madness! The Australian wine journalist James Halliday gives the 2014 Orphan Bank Shiraz 94/100 points!
