The Clos du Roy is a still relatively unknown vineyard, today 22 hectares are planted in the Fronsac AOC with 90% Merlot and 5% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. A long history does not exist here, the first wine was bottled in 1970, before the wine was sold in bulk. Philippe Hermoulet took over the family wineries in 1987 and restored them gradually, today Clos du Roy is a quality jewel and with euphoric reviews in the press, of course, especially for the outstanding 2016 vintage:

James Suckling: Lots of blackberry, blueberry and black-licorice aromas. Full body, chewy tannins and a hazelnut, dark-fruit and walnut aftertaste. A blend of merlot and cabernet franc. Needs two or three years of bottle age to soften. Try in 2022. 92/100

Parker’s Wine Advocate: The 2016 Clos du Roy has a tightly wound bouquet with abundant black fruit waiting to unfold once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded but firm tannin, engaging blackberry and bilberry fruit mixed with mineral and a very refined and persistent finish that is the best I have encountered from this Fronsac estate. 91-93/100
